Cellulite is a skin condition which affects 90 percent of females. It ranges in severity from being visible only when the skin in pinched to the most severe form which consists of soft fat with hard lumps. The condition most often appears after the age of 30 with diet and lifestyle contributing factors.
There are many different treatments to get rid of cellulite. They range from massage, anti cellulite lotions, special footwear and underwear, diet and exercise, and ionithermie (which is a combination of wet clay and electronic stimulation). A new treatment that has just emerged on the market is cellulite laser removal.
There two main types of laser treatments for cellulite removal – TriActive and Accent Laser. Both of these treatments are commercial machines that are used on patients in either a beauty spa or a dermatologist’s clinic.
TriActive uses 6 diode lasers to increase the production of collagen in the skin and to help the fat cells under the skin to shrink. The lasers are used in combination with mechanical massage which stimulates increase circulation to remove the fat cells and any built up fluids. Twice weekly sessions are recommended to up to 16 weeks. A single session will set you back around $100.
Accent Laser differs from TriActive in that it uses radio frequency laser instead of laser light. There are two types of radio waves utilized: BiPolar stimulates collagen production on the surface layer of the skin and the UniPolar melts the fat under the skin. You will need about three to six treatments in order to see results and each session will cost about $500.
The main disadvantage of laser cellulite removal over plastic surgery is that the results are not permanent. You will need to continue the sessions at a lesser frequency in order to keep any gains. Research has shown that Accent Laser has longer lasting results than TriActive.
Another con is the cost. For the same price you can get permanent results from cosmetic surgery and there is no need for follow up sessions. On the other hand, unlike plastic surgery, laser treatment is non-invasive and has minimal side effects. You are able to walk out of the clinic and continue your daily life without any worries.
As with most cellulite treatments, laser therapy doesn’t work for every woman. This is due to individual factors and differences in skin and fat genetics. You should consult a qualified provider of laser therapy to determine whether it is right for you.
