How To Resolve NTFS Boot Sector Corruption?

By Mr. Bury Shane  [ 478 Words ]

NTFS (New Technology File System), the latest file system of Windows operating system was developed to overcome the shortcomings of FAT system. Thats is because NTFS file system is considered to be less prone to corruption than FAT file system. But, sometimes even NTFS encounters corruption related problems.

Actually, sometimes the boot sector of NTFS file system gets corrupted. And if the boot sector gets corrupted, there is a possibility of volume inaccessibility. However, you can repair the corrupted boot sector using a backup of the boot sector. But, if in any case you fail to do so, then you have to use a third-party hard disk recovery software to resolve the issue.

For instance – You are trying to boot your Windows NT based system and suddenly the system stops booting and the following error message appears at the boot loader screen:

“Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <%SYSTEMROOT%>SYSTEM32NTOSKRNL.EXE”

After this error, if you opt for the emergency repair process, the following message appears:

“Setup has determined that your file system is corrupt.”

Furthermore, you cannot boot your system after you encounter any of these messages.

Cause:
Looking at the error messages, the problem is possibly because of a corrupted or damaged NTFS boot sector. This results in inaccessibility of data and may further result in data loss.

Resolution:
In this situation, most of you try to resolve the issue by using fdisk command, but this does not resolve the problem. So, consider the following measure to resolve the issue:

In Windows NT 3.xx version, you can find a duplicate copy of NTFS boot sector at the logical center of the hard disk volume. However, in Windows NT version 4.0, the extra copy of the boot sector is located at the end of the partition. So, you can find the duplicate boot sector to restore the inaccessible information to the primary boot sector. You can use Norton Utilities DiskEdit program to do so.

But, if anyhow you fail to resolve the issue, then you need to use a powerful hard disk recovery application to resolve the issue and recover all the inaccessible data from the NTFS partition. These disk data recovery applications incorporate the most efficient scanning mechanisms to do so. In addition, you get the real experience of using these tools as these are easy to use and understand.
