EDB File Corruption And Resolutions

    -
While trying to mount a mailbox store or a public folder store in the Microsoft Exchange Server, you may get the below mentioned error message:

“The database files in this storage are inconsistent”

The above-mentioned error message appears when your mailbox store or the public folder in the Microsoft Exchange Server has some inconsistencies. These inconsistencies may be caused due to corruption in the EDB file.

There are two methods to deal with this issue.

The first method is to restore the database from a backup. This is a very simple method, but you should try to restore your database from a backup, only if you are sure that the backup is valid, up-to-date, and usable. If you have an inconsistent backup of the store, you can still restore the database from the backup file, and then mount the store. But generally, in case you do not have a valid backup, you should try the other method.

The second method is to repair the damaged Exchange Server database using an inbuilt Exchange Server tool i.e. the Eseutil.exe utility. This utility works in some of the Exchange Server corruption cases.

Steps to repair the damaged Exchange Server database are given below:

1.At the command prompt, change to the drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin folder, where drive is the drive on which Exchange Server is installed. Use one of below mentioned commands:
Type eseutil /p "drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb", and then press the ENTER key. (If trying to restore the mailbox store.)
Type eseutil /p "drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\pub1.edb", and then press the ENTER key. (If trying to restore the public folder store.)
2.At the command prompt, type eseutil /mh "drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb" (or pub1.edb), and then press the ENTER key.
3.To defragement and to compact the database, type eseutil /d "drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb" (or pub1.edb), at the command prompt and then press the ENTER key.
4.Type ISINTEG -S Server_Name -FIX -TEST ALLTESTS at the command prompt, and then press the ENTER key. Repeat this many times until it reports zero fixes and zero errors.
5.Mount the store.
6.Back up the store.

Though Eseutil utility is useful in some cases but it cannot repair the damaged Exchange Server in all the cases, as the Exchange Server database may be severely damaged. Moreover, if the Eseutil utility cannot solve the corruption case, it could delete the file. So, if the Exchange Server database file is very important for you, it is recommended not to use this utility.

In this scenario, a professional third party EDB file recovery software can help you easily and effectively repair all possible cases of corruption.

A number of third party EDB file repair tools are available in the market. Kernel for Exchange Server repair is an ideal tool to perform recovery in cases of severe EDB file corruption issues.

The trial version of the third party EDB file repair tool is available for free download. You can download Kernel for Exchange Server repair in order to test its capabilities. Once you get the feel that the software is capable enough to help you, you can go forward and purchase the complete version of the software.
