The only sure method of breast cancer prevention is the removal of both breasts. Surprisingly, some women with a strong genetic predisposition to this disease are opting for this radical surgery and getting reconstructive surgery.
Most women, however, do not want to undergo such radical surgery such as the removal of both of their breasts, even with reconstructive surgery. Yet most women will jump at the possibility of breast cancer prevention.
There are certain precursors to breast cancer. One of them is genetic. Some women with certain genetic makeup have a greater chance of developing breast cancer. There are certain drugs prescribed for such women that may aid in breast cancer prevention. Other methods of possible breast cancer prevention include exercise, limiting alcohol intake, maintaining weight and consuming a low fat diet. Other possible breast cancer prevention methods include refusing hormone replacement therapy. In recent years, hormone replacement therapy which is essentially a replacement of estrogen that is lost during menopause has been linked to breast cancer. Many doctors are limiting hormone replacement therapy as a means of breast cancer prevention.
While a mammogram cannot be considered breast cancer prevention, it can detect pre-cancer as well as tiny cancers that can not yet be detected by fingers. Yearly mammograms have proven to be very effective at reducing the mortality rate of breast cancer patients.
Recently, some doctors are suggesting that MRIs are even more effective at early detection of breast cancer, which may lead to advance breast cancer prevention.
While total breast cancer prevention may not yet be possible, it is possible to detect the disease early enough in order to insure that a woman has a 90 percent survival rate after treatment. Mammograms, yearly physicals and self examinations are the best ways to prevent breast cancer from spreading. When you see any similar symptoms, see doctor as soon as possible. |
