Air Alfa Airline Information

By Mr. Sachin Agarwal  [ 444 Words ]

Air Alfa was established in 1992. It was acquired by Kombassan in 1996. Air Alfa’s hub in Istanbul has a fleet of Airbus aircraft with an international route to cities of Dusseldorf and Munich in Germany; Basel in Switzerland; and Amsterdam in Holland. Its domestic route covered the cities of Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Adana, Trabzon and Dalaman. Their future plans extended the route trail outside Europe to the rest of the world. Charter services were also offered to tour operators.

In 1999 Cahit Sarayli took on the position of General Manager in Alfa Airlines Technical Maintenance and Repairs. The repairs and maintenance was carried on a daily and weekly basis. However an A-maintenance was also carried out periodically after every 300-400 flight hours. There was also a C-maintenance done after a period of 15 days or after 3000 flight hours by highly-skilled technical professionals.

The maintenance was undertaken by Lufthansa and ASL in Germany, at Sogerme in France and at FSL and BAE in England. The aircraft engines were upgraded by world-renowned firms of MTU (Daimler Chrysler), Lufthansa and Air France. The maintenance of the aircraft components were organized by the Maintenance, Engineering and Planning departments to be checked by leading firms in the aviation industry both in Europe and the US.

The staff strength of Alfa Airlines included 80 pilots, 230 cabin crew, 56 plane engineers and technicians, 71 foreign personnel and 132 general workers. Alfa Airlines was noted for its comfortable and pleasurable flight services complemented with its young and pleasant flight crew. The flight personnel were trained in the Turkish Air Force, the US and many established institutions in Europe. Their training included six months of simulation education in Paris for all personnel, arranged by Air France.

By the end of 1999, Air Alfa had A300 and three A321 aircrafts. In 1997, Air Alfa flew over 688,932 passengers and this figure increased by 45% in 1998 to reach a total of 1,001,123 passengers. In the aviation industry, speed and transportation of goods were also equally important. In 1998 Air Alfa reached 59% increment in the total amount of cargo transported. Air Alfa also underwent a corporate identity exercise. They changed their name to Alfa Airlines with a change in logo and colour and the cabin crew was attired in the corporate hue.

Eventually Air Alfa faced financial difficulties and hence had to cut back on operations which ultimately led to ceasing of operations in December 2001 while their aircrafts were grounded at Istanbul and Antalya.
