Adria Airways, the national carrier of Slovenia and regional member of the Star Alliance, has almost forty years of extensive experience in charter and scheduled services. Its international route spans over Europe and the Middle East. With its core hub in Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport, it has emerged as one of the fastest growing airlines in the world.
Adria Airways first emerged in 1961 as a charter company with its first Douglas DC-6 aircraft, and later acquired a fleet of DC-6s from KLM. In 1968, Adria Airways entered the big league with its first jet-type, the Douglas DC-9. Its first scheduled flight took off in the 80s and Adria Airways joined the International Air Transport Assocation (IATA). Initially it was only involved in chartered flights throughout Europe, but by November 1983, it took on international scheduled flights first to Larnaca and soon to other destinations throughout Europe. By late 80s Adria Airways added several Airbus A320 aircrafts to its fleet. When Yugoslavia fell, it took on the role of being Slovenia’s flag carrier.
In March 1996, Adria Airways had a partial privatization take over. However, the September 11, 2001 attacks had severe repercussions with a drastic decrease in annual flight passengers. This company loss continued for a period of five years. In July 23, 2002, Bombardier Aerospace appointed Adria Airways as the first Bombardier CRJ heavy maintenance facility in Europe. On November 18, 2004, Adria Airways joined the Star Alliance as a regional member. In 2006, Adria Airways made a minimal profit and transported its first annual millionth passenger. By 2007 Adria Airways had flown 1,136,431 passengers and gained a profit of 420,000 euros for the year.
Currently Adria Airways has scheduled services and chartered flights connecting Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia with 40 destinations in over 17 countries, with a large number spread over Europe. With its head office strategically located in Ljubljana, it has a network of representative offices sprawled over 11 European countries.
